How will Bolivia manage its lithium?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Will American companies have direct access to Bolivian lithium. If not, will the US face a competitive disadvantage in hybrid and EV pricing? All about the lithium

South Korean state-run Korea Resources Corporation (KORES) is working hard in Bolivia to gain access to the country’s large supplies of lithium, as are many other companies.

With hybrid cars and other electric vehicles on a path to capture as much as 25 percent of the world’s automarket by 2025, Bolivian lithium appears ever more important.

But, Bolivia is playing their lithium card carefully, searching for quality partners to help Bolivia get the most of its natural resources.

“We need investments,’ and ‘companies who respect Bolivian regulations… who don’t come to play politics’ or ‘conspire against the government,’ said Bolivian President Evo Morales recently.

Does that already leave America out of the mix? If so, would that provide another competitive advantage to non-American automakers?

Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Ellie Phillips, DDS wants you to look inside your mouth and see the truth.

In her book, Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye – a January 2010 release from Greenleaf Book Group Press (www.zellies.com), Dr. Phillips reveals the secrets to keeping your teeth and gums healthy and reducing filling appoints at the dentist. Anyone who wants a healthy oral environment will find the information in this book to be invaluable.

Tooth damage comes from bacterial infections, according to Phillips. If the bacterial infection is not cured the problems will continue, and further dental work and maintenance is needed.

“Traditional care may help you live without pain, but it does not stop the contagious bacterial infection that caused the damage in the first place,” Phillips said. The science isn’t new.

Many dentists are now evaluating their patients’ risk of dental disease and using preventative approach. Using research developed over the last 50 years Phillips has a do-it-yourself, three step system that she has proven time and time again with friends, family and patients. Her goals are to help you have healthy teeth and gums and to make your visits to the dentist a pleasure and not something to fear and avoid.

“Once you are empowered by this simple system, you will most likely find that dental visits will become more rewarding and happier experiences, something you can look forward to without fear, emotion, or worry,” she said. “Imagine loving dental visits!”

Prevention is key according to Phillips, but most dentists have fallen into a brush n floss trap blaming patients for their infection chasing the effects of the oral imbalance with fillings.

“Dentists have been trained to believe that prevention is flossing, sugar control, regular dental cleanings, fluoride in the water and oral examinations,” she said. “We never discussed such variables as acidic saliva or mentioned tooth damage that occurs directly from acidic foods or drinks in the mouth.”

Weak, soft teeth are often an excuse for dental problems but they don’t tell WHY the problems are there. Finding out WHY is the key to solving your dental issues. Dentists should be evaluators, they should explore for potential problems and suggest ways to prevent the problems, not mask them with filling after filling. They also need to be fitness trainers, teaching their patients how to keep healthy and avoid problems.

The first step is to balance the chemistry in the mouth. If there is too much acidity in the mouth, the enamel loses minerals, becomes more porous and the tooth breaks down leaving it weaker and more susceptible to cavities. Remineralization builds the enamel back up and works to rebuild the tooth. This occurs naturally, but can be sped up with the use of a natural plant based sugar, xylitol.

“Xylitol stimulates a rapid flow of mineral-rich saliva into the mouth, which quickly raises the pH and bathes teeth in healing minerals,” said Phillips. “Xylitol makes the mouth instantly alkaline. The shift helps topical fluoride enter into the enamel, so it’s good all around.”

Neutralizing the pH in your mouth can be as simple as eating the right foods and removing the acidity left behind by certain drinks, such as citrus juices.

Phillips’ system for a healthy oral environment includes:

• Cleaning prerinse

• Toothbrushing

• Rinse (twice) after brushing – once with an antiseptic rinse, then immediately after with a protective rinse

She teaches everyone to take charge of their own dental health.

“I hope that perhaps we can turn dental health into a gift enjoyed by everyone,” she said.

Tips on Buying Motorcycle Insurance

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Many people forget, when they are buying their first bike, about motorcycle insurance. They are so excited to jump on their bike and ride it that they forget to add the cost of motorcycle insurance in their payment estimates. Motorcycle insurance is something that every motorcycle rider should have, no matter whether they have an inexpensive Honda motorcycle or a much-more expensive BMW motorcycle. If you’re trying to figure out how to get the most out of your motorcycle insurance, here are a few tips.

Get a combination policy. Most insurance companies know that their policy holders want to save money, and in order to make them happy they have come up with combination policies. This means that you put not only your bike, but also your car, and possibly even your home insurance on the same policy. This makes things easier for the insurance company and can save you a bundle of money at the same time.

Go with liability only. If you are really short of funds, go with liability only insurance. It is the most basic coverage available but will afford you some protection.

Cover your accessories. How much was the new helmet you bought? Or the chrome accessories that you had added to your bike? You can add accessories coverage in order to cover the costs of some of your accessories. A secret is that some insurance companies will pay more for the accessories than they will for the bike. If you happen to dump your bike, you will be able to get more money for a new one when you claim your accessories on the coverage as well.

Compare and contrast. Never choose the first company you contact. Instead, look around and try to find the best deal. You can often get a better deal when you pit one company against another.

Look online. You can find a lot of insurance companies online who will offer you a better rate for your motorcycle insurance than you would get by going through local companies.

Insure more than one bike. If you and your spouse both have a bike, or if you have two bikes, you can save quite a bit of money by insuring more than one bike with the same company.

Motorcycle insurance is not only a good idea, it is required in every state but Florida and Washington. Being smart and methodical when you purchase your motorcycle insurance is often the best way to get a good deal.

A Short History of BAA

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

The British Airports Authority was established in 1966 to manage the government-owned airports at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted. Since then the company has experienced privatization, name changes, acquisitions and growth, and some criticism - but the success of the business cannot be ignored. Here is a short history of the company now known as BAA.

By the 1970s the British Airports Authority had acquired Southampton Airport, Aberdeen Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow International Airport, alongside the big three in and around London. Southampton has since become one of the country’s leading regional airports, handling almost 2 million passengers a year.

In 1986, Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Government passed the airports act serving to privatize the authority as a means to raise funds on the stock market. In the process the company became BAA plc. - confusingly, a name in its own right and no longer standing for British Airports Authority. In 2006 the company was taken over by Grupo Ferrovial, a multinational Spanish consortium specializing in transport and construction, and was consequently renamed once more to BAA Ltd. (though it is often known as BAA Airports Ltd.).

Since being taken over by an international company, it is perhaps no surprise that BAA has expanded globally itself. The subsidiary, BAA USA Inc., was established and is now in charge of retail operations at Logan International Airport in Boston and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. In 1994, BAA also won a contract to manage Indianapolis International Airport until 2004. The contract was then extended and cancelled in 2007.

Despite BAA’s growth and success, the company has been subject to criticism, even leading to the recent enforcement by the UK Competition Commission to sell some of its airports. Amidst arguments that BAA is in a monopoly position, over the next two years the company will have to sell Gatwick and Stansted and one of either Edinburgh or Glasgow. Recent plans to add a third runway at Heathrow have been met with opposition by MPs and the public alike due to, amongst other things, the increase in air and noise pollution.

In 2007 BAA helped establish Flying Matters, a coalition of airlines, operators, food producers, manufacturers and tourist organisations that aim ‘to contribute to a balanced and informed debate on aviation’s contribution to climate change.’ With a focus on the economic value of airport growth and expansion, ranging from issues of more planes to airport parking, Flying Matters has recently opposed green “spin” and argued the importance of aviation to farmers in the developing world.

What You Need to Know About Pet Arthritis

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Mirrored from Pets - breeding, nutrition, health from the Pets - breeding, nutrition, health website.

Arthritis is a known condition that affects pets as well as their owners alike. One aspect that is not known is the fact that the cause of arthritis in pets is different from that in people. Arthritis found in people is usually accompanied with old age, when not in conjunction with another condition. This is a rare instance with pets.

There are at least 14 different types of arthritis found in pets. It is caused most often by a degenerative disease; it may be developmental or can come by way of direct injury, such as a torn ligament. It is true that older dogs tend to have arthritis more than younger dogs, but that can be attributed to the fact that older dogs have had more opportunity to sustain an injury, due to their years as opposed to the younger one.

Even though arthritis occurs in all pets, it is also prevalent in large dogs more often that their smaller counterparts or cats. The reason being is the level of severity of the arthritis condition is directly related to the weight of the animal which put additional stress on the joints. In addition, the most common types of arthritis found in pets are associated with the hip, and with other bone problems. These are usually scenarios that would be found in large, fast-growing dogs.

The joints are comprised of soft connective tissue and cartilage. Their purpose is to be a go between for the bones and provide that area of comfort that allows free motion of the other connected bones. Arthritis appears when there is inflammation of that tissue which leads to a degeneration of the cartilage. This becomes visible in the pet through limping and refusal to put weight on that limb.

There are some signs that may indicate the onset of pet arthritis. It may take your pet a little longer to get up in the morning, or your cat may not jump as high as it used to. They may struggle and have more difficulty moving which may become more difficult for you to experience as you and they realize that they are in pain whenever they walk, or jump. Other signs may include:

• Favoring a limb

• Difficulty sitting or standing

• Sleeping more

• Hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs

• Weight gain

• Being less alert

• Decreased activity or less interested in play

The use of medication has proven to be a successful method in allowing pets to live a pain free life. In the case of inflamed tissues associated with the pet, there may be a need for cage confinement for a short period of time along with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. When the inflammation subsides, exercise and weight control can be incorporated to build back up that joint mobility and muscle strength.

It is important to remember if anti-inflammatory drugs are a part of the medical regimen, that drugs only be prescribed by veterinarian are utilized. Any side effects must be reported to the vet immediately. Do not use anti-inflammatory drugs that are prescribed for human use. The metabolism of a pet versus that of a human is very different. What can be taken safely by a human; can prove to be toxic for a pet. There are natural homeopathic remedies that can be used by your pet with no harmful side effects and can be taken orally. Your best course of action is to consult your veterinarian before beginning any type of pet arthritis regimen. No matter which course of action you select to alleviate your pet’s arthritis, make sure you discuss the situation with a professional to assure the safest and pain free way to get your pet active again and enjoying life!

Ford, GM Raise U.K. Prices to Squeeze Value From Falling Pound

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Originally published at My news weblogs. Please leave any comments there.

Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. plan to raise prices in the U.K. to counter the pound’s drop, a strategy that may drive away buyers and accelerate the plunge in British car sales.

Ford says it will raise sticker prices in the U.K. by an average of 4.7 percent today, including a 5.2 percent increase for the best-selling Ford Focus. GM’s Vauxhall, whose sister brand Opel has cut prices and offered improved financing in Germany, will release details of a planned U.K. increase later this month, Simon Hucknall, a Vauxhall spokesman, said in a phone interview.

“Additional price increases are likely unless there is a strengthening in the value of the pound against the euro,” Brian Bennett, a Ford spokesman in England, said in an e-mailed response to questions.

U.K. auto sales fell 11 percent last year, with the decline gathering pace in December, when vehicle deliveries dropped 21 percent. The pound has fallen 11 percent against the euro and 27 percent against the dollar in the past six months, leading carmakers to strike a new balance between logging a sale in Britain and getting enough money from a purchase.

Raising prices in the midst of a recession is normally “suicidal,” Simon Empson, managing director of car sales Web site Broadspeed.com, said in a phone interview. Dealers use Empson’s business to move hard-to-sell inventory.

Writing Off Britain

“The manufacturers are going to write off the U.K. market for the foreseeable future,” said Empson, whose site is offering a buy-one-get-one-free deal on the 2008 Kia Magentis. “There’s such an overhang in the market that we’re seeing dealers sell at real losses. I can’t see too many positives right now.”

GM’s price increases are “due to the decline in value of sterling,” Hucknall said.

The Bank of England cut the key interest rate in January to the lowest level since the bank was created in 1694 as it tries to drag an economy that’s contracting at the fastest pace since 1980 out of a recession. Frozen credit markets have led to unprecedented discounting, such as Broadspeed’s offer on the Kia model.

Boosting prices seems “idiotic” because it’s likely to accelerate the industry’s decline, said Tim Urquhart, a London- based analyst with research firm IHS Global Insight. “The argument may be: What’s the difference? They’re not selling anyway, so we may as well charge a decent price.”

The U.K. car market is the third largest in Europe and was traditionally a key source of profits for automakers because of the high prices consumers were willing to pay, Urquhart said.

‘Cash Cow’

“They saw the English consumer as a cash cow, but no one’s making money in the U.K. right now,” said Urquhart, who estimates that sales of cars and sport-utility vehicles will fall 19 percent to 1.96 million vehicles this year in Britain.

Volkswagen AG, Europe’s largest carmaker, probably will follow the lead of its U.S. rivals. Paul Buckett, a spokesman for the German carmaker’s U.K. operations, said the company tries to keep pricing in line with competitors and that GM and Ford are two of the manufacturers it tracks. “We are looking at what our competitors are doing.”

The weaker pound means Europe-based manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Fiat SpA, get fewer euros for cars sold in Britain, depressing profits.

“The manufacturers should be helping dealers by putting the price down rather than up,” said Richard Peace, a sales manager at car dealer Motorhouse in Cannock, England, near Birmingham. “It all comes down to price” in the current environment, he said.

Export to Continent

The pound’s decline also makes U.K. cars potentially attractive for exporting to continental Europe, even with the steering wheel on the opposite side, and could hurt sales there, said Broadspeed’s Empson.

Higher U.K. car prices will “protect more profitable EU markets and provide support for drastically falling” values of cars being returned from leases, Empson said. The U.K. car market has reversed, he said, becoming the cheapest in Europe “by a big margin.”

How to Install Wall Safes

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Mirrored from All world articles from the All world articles website.

Wall safes are great for securely storing your valuables such as; money, jewellery and critical documents while saving room space at the same time. However, wall safes aren’t popular choices by consumers because some think of the installation procedure as a difficult one and that professional help is needed. With the space-saving benefits that wall safes have compared to other safes, don’t let that discourage you. In fact, it is possible to install these wall safes yourself if you do a little bit of decision making and following a few steps.

First of all, you need to decide what size and style you want your safe to be. It can be a daunting process, but can be done by looking for suitable locations to install the safe. When choosing for a location, make sure that no wires or pipes are within the walls so you can cut through. Keep in mind with the thickness of the safe as it can stick out through the other side of the wall. Having the rare of the safe in a closet or pantry is a good strategy.

The safe should come with a template for you to trace for cutting. You will need a carpenter’s level to check if it’s really level. Once you confirmed that it’s level, you can proceed to tacking the template onto the wall firmly and trace around the edges using a pencil.

Hammer a nail into the centre of the wall section so it can be pulled after cutting. After that, make sure that there are no pipes or wires within by cutting a small hole and feeling around the wall. Start cutting from the bottom leading to the sides and finally the top portion. Be careful not to cut too deep to the other side of the wall. Use the nail you hammered in the centre earlier to pull the wall piece out.

You should have a clean cut based on the template you used and should be ready for installation of the wall safe. Try placing it inside and make sure it is a comfortable and tight fit. If there is some extra space due to cutting inaccuracies, you can make up for it by nailing some shims to the studs to make it sturdy and secure. Finally, from inside the safe, drill some holes in the wall studs so you can apply the 2-inch screws to finalize the installation process.

From there, you can start testing your newly installed safe and setting any security parameters needed for operation. The overall process isn’t all that hard and the main difficulty lies on deciding the type of safe for your wall and sawing the wall piece off. If you feel you cannot do that yourself, you can always ask a friend to do it or pay a professional to have it installed safely. All the efforts of installing wall safes are worth it because you get all the benefits of a regular safe without taking up any valuable space in your room.
